Learn essential skincare advice from board-certified dermatologist Dr. Linda Xing on building an effective routine, tackling post-acne marks, and understanding the role of targeted treatments like spot patches.

What specific ingredients should I be looking for in skincare products if I have acne-prone skin?

Dr. Xing: "Look for salicylic acid to reduce oil production and exfoliate, benzoyl peroxide to fight acne-causing bacteria, niacinamide to calm inflammation and fade dark spots, and finally add a retinol at night, which pretty much does everything."

CeraVe recommends the following: Incorporate CeraVe Acne Foaming Cleanser with 4% Benzoyl Peroxide and CeraVe Acne Control Gel with 2% Salicylic Acid into your daily routine to target oil and acne effectively. Complete with CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum.

What is the most effective way to get rid of lingering post-acne marks?

Dr. Xing: "Sunscreen is really the number one non-negotiable; without it, nothing else works. Add a retinol at night to help lift the pigmentation and make your cells turn over better. Remember to stay consistent, because it can take a couple of months."

CeraVe recommends the following: Protect your skin daily with CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 50, and use the Resurfacing Retinol Serum at night to help smooth skin texture and fade post-acne marks.

Do pimple patches replace the need for a full skincare routine, or do I still need to be doing a full routine regardless?

Dr. Xing: "Pimple patches definitely cannot replace a skincare routine. One of the biggest mistakes I see is doing spot treatment only for acne, like relying on a pimple patch. Sure, it can calm that one blemish, but it does nothing to prevent the next one from coming. Stick to a full skincare routine that targets acne overall instead of just chasing the latest pimple."

CeraVe recommends the following: Start with a daily cleanser such as CeraVe Acne Foaming Cleanser with 4% BPO, follow by a targeted treatment such as Acne Control Gel with Salicylic Acid or Resurfacing Retinol Serum for post-acne marks. Don't forget your SPF! Finally, use your Anti-Spot Patches to cover and protect individual spots.
